SOD – Sounds of Death (Missouri, USA) #2 Winter 1993. Editor: “David Horn”
Sort of in between a zine and magazine, David Horn’s eventually long-running Sounds Of Death started off ambitious right away. Featuring pro-print, color cover, and a nice design from Dan Zimmer, it had an underground feel, without the mainstream nonsense that often polluted bigger magazines at the time. This issue is no exception. First off, there is original art on the cover, in haunting full-color from the legendary Dan Seagrave, coupled with an extensive interview inside…also I did not know he sold a portfolio (see ad below) that would be excellent to see today…anyone have it?
Also, we have a “time capsule” interview with James and Lars from Metallica, before “Kill em All” was released, from their 1983 tour. They state that they were 19 years old….wow. The city was New York, and they were opening for Venom. They get into the split with Mustaine extensively, their influences, Armored Saint, and touring, among other things.
Lastly, there is reprint of the press release for Deicide concerning the bomb that went off at their gig in Stockholm in 1992. Also, on that note, in the lengthy Cannibal Corpse interview with Chris Barnes, he discusses his adventures with Benton tagging along while he harasses Christians at a mall in Wisconsin. Speaking of God, there is an interview with Living Sacrifice, tons of cool ads, and Demolition Hammer.
